Rufus was the son of James MAY & Retta Ann COBURN. He married Laura Elizabeth MYERS on 15 Oct 1881 in Wesson MS. They had nine children: Mansul Carl, Mary Ann, Rufus Green, Luther Lathan, Ina Estelle, Wincy O, Harriet O.Z., Lena Bell & Elmer Ingram MAY.

Rufus D. May, 74 years and 1 month old, died at his home on 26th avenue, Gulfport, Saturday afternoon, at 5:30 o'clock. He was born in Shreveport, La., August 12, 1858, and had been a resident of Gulfport for more than 20 years. He was a member of the Baptist church and was well known in the community. Surviving him are the wife, Mrs. Laura May, three sons, N.C. May, Laurel; L.L. May and Elmer May, Gulfport, and three daughters, Mrs. W.F. Royals, Mrs. Frank Vickers and Mrs. J.R. Morris, all of Gulfport. Funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, Rev. B. Locke Davis and Rev. Sheldon Dodge, Baptist ministers of Gulfport, officiating. Out of town persons attending the funeral were J.C. Myers, Silver Creek, and Mrs. C.J. May, McComb.
