He was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Gentry.

He enlisted in the Union Army at Camp Ward, Kentucky on October 2, 1861 as a Private in Company K, 21st Kentucky Infantry Regiment. He mustered out on December 9, 1865 at Victoria, Texas.

The husband of Martha Elizabeth (Simpson), they had ten children: Ermine E, 1863; Daniel P, 1864; William E, 1868; Leorah C, 1870; George L, 1874; Charles E, 1877; Mary F, 1880; Laura, 1882; Clarence T, 1887; and one unknown name.

In 1900, the census record shows they had 10 children, but only 7 were living. They were in White Oak, Adair County. The record also shows that he was a dry goods merchant.
