Comanche - MARY LOU BRAUNER, 88, of Comanche, Okla., passed from this life Sunday, July 20, 2008, and peacefully entered God's eternity, having previously asked Him into her heart.
Funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in First United Methodist Church in Comanche, with the Rev. Paul McDowell officiating. Interment will be in Fairlawn Cemetery under direction of Comanche Funeral Home.
She was born July 13, 1920, in Comanche, the third of five offspring born to Bush and Iva E. "Mickey" Bowles. Mary Lou graduated from Comanche High School in 1937, gained a diploma from Duncan Business College, and ended up as a personal secretary to a key administrator of the USDA offices of what is now known as Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. While there, she met Sgt. Stanley A. Olsen and they were married on Oct. 9, 1943. She assumed the role of mother to her husband's 1-year-old daughter, and they went on to have another daughter and a son.
They moved to California. The marriage lasted 27 years but ended with irreconcilable differences. Mary Lou continued to live in Santa Cruz, working for Cabrillo College Food Services, where she was a highly valued employee, making many lifelong friends.
She eventually retired when she met retired Maj. Frederick C. Brauner, U.S. Army, a likable and good-humored career military man. Having met through mutual friends and discovering a deeper happiness than either had found in their first marriages, they were married Feb. 16, 1974, in Reno, Nev. They began a very special love-filled life together that lasted 32 years until Fred went to be with the Lord on March 10, 2006.
Mary Lou possessed an unusually sunny and bright disposition, a keen sense of humor, and loved to laugh, sing and joke with others. Being a natural-born entertainer, her laugh and beautiful smile made her a joy to be around and brought many a smile to the faces of those around her. She loved to take her early morning coffee on her front porch swing, and listen to the Oklahoma countryside wake up, or as was aptly put, "front porch coffee drinking and mockingbird listenin'."
She was genuine and found beauty in simple things like a beautiful sunrise or sunset, bird songs and flowers in bloom. Quick with a name for everything, she found and kept many treasures, like driftwood dragons and pictures in rocks - treasures that many others would never notice.
She is survived by a brother, Mickey L. Bowles of Edmond; a sister, JoAnn Brown of Comanche; a stepdaughter, Bonnie A. Olsen of Carson City, Nev.; a daughter, Karen Sue Bouchard of Baker City, Ore.; a son, Stephen S. Olsen of Comanche; and a host of extended family members, including six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Mary Lou was preceded in death by both her first and second husbands; her father and mother; and two older brothers, Cliff and Gene.
