Son of Anna Hanner and Jeptha Dawkins Gibson. Husband of Mary McLeod. They were 2nd cousins, sharing great-grandparents Nelson Gibson & Rutha Dawkins.

Both Mary and Robert were from Richmond County. In 1900, they were living in Red Springs, Robeson County. Robert was a grain merchant. By 1920, they had returned to live in Ellerbe, Richmond County, where Robert was Postmaster of the Mineral Springs Post Office.

Mary and Robert had no children of their own but they did care for a niece of Robert. In the 1920 US Federal census, 15-year old Annie Maitland Lyon is living in their household. She was the daughter of Robert's sister Lilly Lee Gibson Lyon who died of TB in 1917. Annie and her siblings were sent to live with extended family. She married Joseph Rufus Meachum of Wadesboro, Anson County.
