Daughter of Annie McLeod and William Archibald McKay.
On May 23, 1869, Jane married John Hampton Covington with whom she had six children. He died in September 1879 of paralysis at age 31. One child died very young, as Jane reports in the 1900 US Federal Census that she had six children and five were living. They are: Cornelia Ann Covington Baxley, Martha Jane Covington McDonald, William Hampton Covington, James Hampton Covington and Archie Covington.
On February 4, 1892, at age 46, she married into the Terry family. Her second husband was Elisha C. Terry, a prosperous farmer who lived and owned property nearby. His first wife had passed away in 1891. There were several Terry teenagers in the household (including the writer's grandmother Mary Catherine "Kate" Terry McLeod).
In addition to being neighbors in the rural community of Roberdell, Richmond County, Jane and Elisha had several familial relationships. Her brother Daniel Duncan McKay had married Elisha's daughter Henrietta in 1887. Both Jane and Elisha had daughters named Cornelia Ann who married Baxley brothers in 1888 and 1890. As the widowed Jane McKay Covington, she lived with the Baxleys down the road from the Terry family farm prior to marrying Elisha Terry.
In his last will and testament, Elisha left Jane 10 acres in satisfaction of her dower, along with furniture, kitchen items, poultry and livestock.
After Elisha's death in 1911, Jane moved back into the house she had previously occupied with the Baxleys. This house was probably originally owned by the Covington family, as an 1886 map shows many Covington houses near that of E. C. Terry.
Jane was given lifetime rights to a room in this house, probably by her daughter Cornelia Ann Covington Baxley who predeceased her in 1918. Cornelia's husband, Allen Lane Baxley, had died in 1893. The lifetime rights story has been passed down among related Baxley and McDonald descendants who continue to reside in Richmond County in 2012.
Jane has not yet been located in the 1920 US Federal Census records. Descendants explain that during those years she moved among her children's households and might have missed the enumerator when he came to call.
In 1930, she is found living in the household of her married granddaughter, Mabel Baxley Gibson, in Sanford, Lee County NC. (She was incorrectly enumerated as mother-in-law.) Mabel is the daughter of Cornelia Ann Covington Baxley, who passed away in 1918.
At the time of her death in 1936, Jane appears to have been living in her house in Roberdell, as her death certificate reports she is a housekeeper in her own home with a rural delivery address outside of Rockingham. That would have been Roberdell.
Jane is buried to the left of Elisha's grave. His first wife, Abigail McDonald, is on his other side. In front of them are Jane's daughter Cornelia and her husband Allen Lane Baxley. Elisha's daughter Cornelia and her husband Thomas Baxter Baxley are also buried at Bear Branch Cemetery. Jane's first husband, John Hampton Covington, is buried nearby at a small Covington family graveyard.
