Harold Leon Shafer, 89, of Baxter Springs, Kan., went home to be with the Lord Saturday, July 19, 2008, at Quaker Hill Nursing Home. Harold was born May 26, 1919, in Joplin, Mo., to the union of Charles and Alice (Holman) Shafer. He was united in marriage to Lodema (Culver) Shafer, April 5, 1953. Harold was proud to serve our country as a lieutenant in the US Army fighting in World War II and The Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion and Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Baxter Springs. After the service Harold worked for B.F. Goodrich where he worked for 39 years retiring in 1984. Harold was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Alice Shafer; five brothers; one sister; daughter, Linda Kay Huxall; and his wife, Lodema Shafer. He is survived by one son, Stanley Shafer and wife, Laurie Shafer, of Baxter Springs; one daughter, Sandra Shafer-Preston and husband, Robert "Dago" Preston, of Tulsa, Okla.; four grandchildren, Shanel Shafer-Alexander, David Shafer, Skeet Preston and Cory Preston; and three great-grandchildren, Nathan Bohannan, Javen Alexander and Cassidy Preston; along with extended family and friends. Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, at the Baxter Springs Cemetery. Pastor Jeff Street will officiate the service. Arrangements are under the direction of Derfelt's Baxter Chapel, Baxter Springs.
