Elizabeth Harriet Fellows was born to Moses Skellenger Fellows and Fannie Frost in Livingston County, New York on March 28, 1839. Elizabeth married Andrew Jackson Backus II in Livingston, New York in 1869. A year later they moved to Carbondale, Jackson, Illinois where Andrew set up a mercantile store with his younger brother George who had previously moved to Illinois. Just two years later on a trip to New York, Andrew passed away and left Elizabeth a widow. She continued to run the store until she met David Ruffin Harrison from Herrin Illinois, who was visiting family in Carbondale. David Ruffin Harrison and Elizabeth Fellows Backus married on November 18, 1879.

The Harrison family called Elizabeth "Big Grandma" and her husband, David Ruffin Harrison's mother, Delilah Herrin Harrison "Little Grandma". During the 1890s they all lived in the same Harrison House located in Herrin's Prairie. The Harrison House was relocated in 2010 to the John A. Logan College campus where the house, along with the original cabin built by David Ruffin Harrison were dedicated and preserved as historical monuments to early Southern Illinois pioneer life.
