My dearest grandfather was born on April 15, 1904 to Dr. Albert Matthew Harrison and Myrtle Alden Harrison in Rockford, Winnebago County, Illinois. He was the youngest of three children. John Alden Harrison was a direct descendant of Mayflower pilgrims, John Alden & Priscilla Mullins. He attended Rockford schools graduating from Rockford High School in 1922. He was highly intelligent and had considered becoming a civil engineer attending the University of Ohio for a few semesters before deciding to follow in his father, Albert Mathew Harrison's (Memorial #28092315) footsteps and become a dentist. He attended Chicago School of Dental Surgery and received his D.D.S. While in his residency at Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago he met and married a nursing student, Florence Mary Minshall in 1928. He practiced dentistry alongside his father at his office in the Talbot Building in downtown Rockford for several years. John Alden and Florence (Minshall) Harrison had a daughter, Barbara Jean Harrison on March 21, 1929. In 1936, John Alden Harrison returned to Loyola University where he obtained his M.D.S. in oral surgery. In 1950 he joined the U.S. Navy Reserves and moved the family to San Diego, California. He was called to active duty and served aboard the USS McKinley during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy he retired at the rank of Commander. It was after he left the Navy that he moved his family to La Jolla, California where he set up his private practice that lasted more than 20 years. He was an avid golfer, gardener and bridge player. He was a dearly beloved son, father, husband, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
