Served in both the 27th Maine and the 32nd Maine Infantry Regiments during the Civil War. He was captured in the Battle of Crater at Petersburg, VA on 30 July 1864 and spent some time as a POW until he was exchanged.

Following the war, he lived his life in Kittery, working nearly 25 years with the Boston & Maine Railroad. He was a baggage master, operating the draw of the Portsmouth - Kittery Bridge.

He died in Dover, NH at the home of his daughter Minnie, with whom he was spending the winter.

George is the son of Seth Gardiner Damon (1797-1883) and his first wife Nancy Gelbert Basford Damon (1798-~1855)
