Architect and illustrator. He is primarilly best known as being a founder member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Born in Lambeth, the son of a coachman, he was apprenticed at an early age to an architects office, prior to pursuing a career as a artist. Amongst his many projects were workhouses in and around London and the design of the William Brown Library in Liverpool, (1857-1860). He also worked with Sir Charles Barry on the Houses of Parliament, and his design for the Holy Trinity Church, castelnau, in 1868, his local church to which he contributed £50 towards the cost of its construction. He also furnished early drawings for a series of illustrated works on Scotland and exhibited at the Royal Academy.
