Lydia was born in Henry County, Missouri, on February 2, 1894 to Jasper Newton Cale and Nola May Gaupp. The eldest of four siblings, her younger sisters included Freda R. Cale (Booth), Edna May Cale (Johnston), and Helen Irene Hazel Cale who died before her second birthday.

In 1914, at the age of 20, Lydia married Louis Terry Koch in Henry County, Missouri on May 31. They would separate and divorce the following year. The divorce documents show there were no children from this marriage and that Lydia resumed the use of her maiden name.

At the age of 53, Lydia became ill with Colon Cancer and passed away in Kansas City, Missouri at Vinyard Park Hospital on August 21, 1947. She is buried in Englewood Cemetery in Clinton, Missouri. Clarence would later be buried beside her.
