George was the son of Thomas and Sarah Ann (Speer) Hollis. He was first married to Margaret Clarissa Donnell on 30 Apr 1857 in Decatur CO, IN. They had 8 children: Martin B; Thomas B; Milton A; Luther; Owen; Oley; Cora; and Lizzie.

He was married second to Lydia Ann and they had 5 children: Oliver M; George W; Mabel; Albert; Margaret.

George W. Hollis was a Captain of Company I, 123rd Indiana Volunteers when the war ended in 1865. He also served with Company C, 76th Regiment Indiana Volunteers, and Company A, 123rd Indiana Infantry. He was discharged from the service at Lexington, North Carolina August 25, 1865.

Born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania on 1 May 1833, Captain Hollis died in Ponca City on January 14,1897. He was one of the original settlers of Ponca City.
