From the Klamath Herald and News, May 24, 1988:
Robert "R.D." Smith, 90, Malin died Saturday in Klamath Falls.

Mr. Smith was born Jan. 10, 1898, in Gail, Texas, to James and Martha Elizabeth Johnson Smith. He was married to Vera Johnson in Lovelland, Texas on March 19, 1924. As a young man, he worked as a wrangler on cattle drives from Texas to Kansas.

He spent several years as a ranger in the U.S. Forest Service in New Mexico. During World War II, he worked in the war effort in Portland. His love for cattle and horses always brought him back to ranching, however.

He retired in 1963, but returned a year later to ranching and worked full time until he was 83 years old.

Survivors include his wife Vera; son James and wife Joan of Springfield; daughter, Mary Singer of Malin; six grandchildren, Ed Singer, Stephen Smith, Allen Smith, DeAnn Daves, Debbie Cutshall, and Tommy Smith.

Interment at Malin Community Cemetery.
