Sarah Lavina was born to Francis Truman Woodruff and Catherine Priscilla Shields Woodruff in Hickory county, Missouri. When she was a young girl, the family moved to Philomath, Benton county, Oregon. She attended Philomath College and then she and her two sisters, Lucy Jane and Maryetta "Etta", enacted their own photography business known as the Woodruff Studio.

"Viney" married on 30 Apr 1890 in Benton County, Oregon to William Harvie Gregory, son of Carloss Armstrong and Aldoolah Cindoris (See) Gregory. The couple had three daughters Luzena L, Helen Adela, and Bertha May.
