My Maternal Grandfather, James Clayton Shackelford, was born December 17, 1862 at Summersette, Indiana. He moved to Oregon with his family at the age of 11 to Cottage Grove & then to Crawfordsville where he attended school.

In about 1880 he located near Enterprise, Oregon, & on Jan. 1, 1895, he married Elnorah Ann Gillespie (Grandma Shackelford) at Crawfordsville, Oregon. Their first child, Wilbur, was born on Oct 2, 1895, & died only 1 month later on Nov. 4. My Mother, Susannah Angeline, was born Sept. 7, 1896 at Wagner, Oregon. It is reasonable to assume that Wilbur was also born at Wagner. The family moved to Enterprise shortly after Susannah was born, where Eddeth (Aunt Ted) was born Nov. 7, 1898, Hazel was born in 1900 (but lived only three years), & Elnorah (Aunt Babe) was born July 16, 1902.

The family came to love Enterprise, Joseph, & the Wallowa Lake area.

In 1900, Clayton was a farmer, & owned farm #77 free & clear. He was elected Sheriff of Wallowa County in 1902 & served for 2 years. He owned & operated the Enterprise Livery & Feed Stable after this until the family moved to Clarkston, WA in 1910. The word is that Clayt signed a note on behalf of a trusted friend, Guy Horner, for $25,000.00. Something went awry & Clayt lost the farm & the business. This would appear to have had quite an effect on our own beginnings (this, Grandfather Schnabel's train wreck, Grandma "Norey's" polio, Great Grandfather Regan's misfortune at sea, & Thomas & Angeline Jackson's estrangement.

When Grandpa Shackelford moved to Clarkston, he tried a couple of ventures like Real Estate & fruit canning, but didn't seem to find the right combination. In his later years, he lived at our Lewiston home & served as Night Watchman for the COD Laundry. We had to be very quiet when he slept during the day. He let me eat the left-over peanut butter sandwiches from his lunch.

My favorite memories are how he loved us kids & how he liked to tease us. He had an old Model T Ford which he cherished & took care if like a jewel. I'll never forget how please he was when he found a device called "Devil Dog" which was supposed to honk the horn loudly if someone tried to steal the car (just like our Taurus). KAHOOOOOGA!! He also had a full-sized cabinet wind-up Victor Phonograh. I can still remember some of the 78 rpm records he played.

Grandpa died from stomach cancer in the downstairs bedroom of our 817 8th Avenue home in Lewiston on December 7, 1931. He is buried at Vineland Cemetey, Clarkston, Washington. PMS Jr. 2/12/2007
