George N. Bashara, 67, past president of the Detroit College of Law and past member of the Board of Directors of Wayne State University, died on April 8, 2002, in his Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan, residence.
Mr. Bashara was born and raised in Detroit, and received a bachelor's degree in art from the University of Michigan, and a law degree from the Detroit College of Law. At his time of death, he was employed at Clark Hill P.C. in Detroit.
Mr. Bashara was a 33rd degree Mason of the Chancellor Street Chapter, the past president of the Lochmoor Club, and former vice president and general counsel member of the Federal Mogul Corp.
Mr. Bashara also was a member of the State Advisory Commission on Drug Abuse and Alcoholism, and a judge of the Wayne County Probate and Circuit courts as well as the Michigan Court of Appeals. At the time, the 38-year-old Bashara was the youngest state Appeals Court judge in Michigan history.
Throughout his career, Judge Bashara was active in bar associations at the national, state and local levels and in the Arab American Bar Association. He served in dozens of community organizations, including Big Brothers, March of Dimes, Boys' Clubs, and various hospital foundations, assumed leadership roles in the Episcopal Church as well as various ecumenical organizations in the Detroit area, and was a Mason.
Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, playing backgammon or golf and being involved St. Michael's Church.
Mr. Bashara was survived by his wife, Suzanne H. Bashara; his daughter, Laura Bashara Maurer; his son, Robert M. Bashara Sr.; his sisters, Gwendolyn Samuel, Judith Pleve (Steve) and Carol George (Tobias); his step-daughter, Meribeth Meyers; his step-son, J. Scott Simon; and his five grandchildren.
