He entered the service in the Civil war as a Sergeant of Co. E 9th NY Infantry USV (also known as the Hawkins Zouaves), May 4, 1861 and mustered out at expiration of term of enlistment, May 20, 1863. On August 22, 1863 he was again mustered into the service as Captain of Co. F 178h NY Veteran Infantry USV, and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of the same Regiment, August 20, 1864. He died of pneumonia at the city hospital in St. Louis, MO March 23, 1922.
