Geneva Lourena Atkins/Jones/Tysinger, aka "Mama Jones," was first and foremost a follower of Jesus Christ, possessing profound will power, boundless energy, and unwavering faith. Deep personal convictions led to her living a life of service, which took the form of being a midwife, a registered nurse, an ordained minister, and a formidable and renowned prayer warrior.

Mama Jones was one of the first women to receive a preacher's license in the Wesleyan Methodist Church—despite having no more than a Third Grade education, and teaching herself to read. She received this license just one year after the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote. 22 years later, the church ordained her. She pastored in two churches and helped found a third.

Her prayers unquestionably saved the life of her youngest child, J.C. Jones, when he was in a dire situation in World War II. There's a great deal more to that story, but this isn't the place or time. J.C. went on to father six children, and lived to see and know all eleven of his grandchildren, including me.

Mama Jones was an individual truly like no other, and this world is richer for having benefited from her personal sacrifices and service, and unshakeable faith in God. And the world is also significantly lesser for her absence from it.
