On September 26, 1950, he was aboard a C-54D Skymaster transport departing from Ashiya, Japan when the aircraft crashed into the Sea of Japan. Private Wimbish was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
