His early education was obtained at McCabe's University School, in Petersburg, Virginia, from which he entered the University of Virginia, being graduated therefrom in 1885 with the degree of Doctor of Medicine. He studied for twelve months in the New York Polyclinic Hospital, and returned to his native city, where he began the practice of his profession, which still continues. He is Surgeon of the Petersburg City Hospital. He is a member of the Petersburg Medical Faculty, the Virginia State Medical Society, the Tri-State Medical Association and the American Medical Association. In politics he is a Democrat.
In 1888 he married Miss Mary Elizabeth Plummer, and has four children: Mary Plummer, William Byrd, Rebecca and Lucy Atkinson McIlwaine.
