BROKEN BOW YOUTH DIES WHILE AT STATE "BOOT CAMP"

Classmates of Travis Ballard, 15, were expected to be among those attending funeral services at Broken Bow today for the Broken Bow sophomore who died about 5 p.m. Friday at Mayes County Medical Center in Pryor.

Ballard was doing exercises at the Thunderbird Youth Academy at Pryor when he collapsed at 3:50 p.m. Friday, a spokesperson for the Oklahoma Office of Juvenile Affairs (OJA) said today. Causes of his death may not be known for weeks, OJA officials say.

Ballard, whose mother Judy Alcorn Mauricio lives in Broken Bow and father Tommy Ballard lives in Whittier, Calif., was born Jan. 16, 1984, in Downey, Calif.

Ballard was in his 11th day of a 14-to-21-day short-term intensive camp that the Oklahoma Military Department (OMD) conducts under contract with the OJA.

The youth had been referred to authorities after a discipline-related problem at school.

Ballard had been participating in the program since the last part of August and apparently was doing an outstanding job in the Thunderbird program. He was expected to return to school soon, several sources told the Gazette.

Dawn Byram. director of media relations at the OJA, said the state's military department operates two programs in conjunction with her agency. Thunderbird Youth Academy is for youth who have been placed in state juvenile custody through court adjudication.

Ballard "had received a physical before going and it showed no reason for him not to participate in activities." Byram said the youth was outside doing exercises with other participants and the stall of the Thunderbird Youth Academy and had been outside approximately 15 minutes when he collapsed. Emergency medical personnel were called, who transported Ballard to the Pryor hospital where he died a short time later.

An investigation is being conducted by the Office of Client Advocacy, an independent body headed by Nancy Nichols in cases wherever there are any questions raised or any allegations.

An autopsy was performed by the Oklahoma State Medical Examiner's office but a report on "maner and cause of death" may not be available for up to 12 weeks, said a spokesperson.

A Broken Bow school official said that as part of the individual education plan (IEP) for Ballard, it was agreed before the beginning of the year that local police were to be contacted on the first occasion there were any disciplinary problems.

Jerry Regier, the director of the OJA, issued a statement, as follows:
"The death of this young man is a terrible tragedy and we are deeply saddened by it. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

"The cause of death will be determined by an autopsy, the results of which will be available in approximately 12 weeks.

"The office of Juvenile Affairs and the Oklahoma Military Depertment are cooperating fully with the investigation by the Office of Client Advocacy so that all facts will be known."

Ballard was a member of Golden Baptist Church. He enjoyed outdoor activities and his wood shop class. He had lived in Broken Bow the last two years, moving from Long Beach, Calif.

Survivors include his parents; his paternal grandparents, Tom and Ernestine Ballard Sr. of California; his maternal grandparents, Joyce Vaughn and Joe Alcorn of California; one sister, Jaylee A. Mauricio of Broken Bow; two aunts, three uncles and seven cousins.

Randy Watkins officiated at today's services, which were under the direction of Brumley-McCurtain Funeral Home, Broken Bow.
