Dayton C. Sheridan went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2007, after a short battle with cancer.
Funeral: Mass of Christian Burial will be 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Andrew Catholic Church, the Rev. Robert Wilson, celebrant. Burial: Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Thompson's Harveson & Cole Funeral Home where a vigil service will begin at 7 p.m.
Pallbearers: Robert Merrill, John Sheridan, Charles Merrill, Ken Pape, Stace Pape, Dayton Sheridan IV, Brendan Sheridan and Sean Stephens.
Dayton was born July 25, 1921, to Helen and Dayton Sheridan Sr. in Knoxville, Tenn. He atttaned the rank of captain, 146th U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II. He married Marie Merrill on Nov. 14, 1945, in Greenville and they were blessed with four children.
After being honorably discharged with honors from the military, Dayton worked for Robin Hood Flour Co. in Nashville, Tenn. He then worked for Merrill Motor Lines in Greenville and later transferred to San Antonio. He moved to Fort Worth in 1952 and continued to work for Merrill Motor Lines until he started his own real estate company in 1960. Marie joined him in real estate business a few years later. Eventually, they joined Ed Yager & Co. and after a few years bought the residential section and merged with Wm. Rigg Co. Dayton and Marie managed the residential section of Wm. Rigg for many years. Later they started their own company, Sheridan, McCann & Staples. After several years, the company was sold to Coldwell Banker. Dayton and Marie continued in the real estate business and worked for the Williams Trew Co. until 2006 when they both retired after 46 years in the real estate business.
Dayton Sheridan will be remembered for his honesty, integrity, his wonderful personality and great love for his family and friends. Because of his strong faith and commitment to family, he was an excellent role model for his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed his family especially attending all of his grandchildren's athletic events and took great pride in all of their accomplishments. He was an avid bird watcher and could sit outside for hours in the country at his son's or daughter's homes. He loved traveling with his wife, which included a trip to Europe for their 50th wedding anniversary. He also loved telling jokes and never met a stranger. He will be deeply missed by all of his loving family and friends.
