A TREASURED ROSE

Nina Lynette Gilbert
was born on October 8, 1986 in
Blue Island, Illinois to the union of Leonard K. Gilbert III and Sharon (Montgomery) Gilbert. To this union three children were born Nina, Danielle (who preceded her in death) and Leonard IV.

Nina leaves to cherish her memories, parents, Leonard III and Sharon Gilbert; brother, Leonard IV; grandparents, Lenard and Lillian Gilbert; aunt Gail Portis; uncles, Paul (Yolanda) Montgomery, William Gilbert, Leslie Grant, Nathaniel Grant, Darren Gilbert, Carlton Gilbert; cousins, Anthony (Tomica) Portis, DuWayne Sr. (Verona), her "special Portis Boys" Tyler, Tariq and DuWayne Jr.; an abundance of relatives, church family members and friends.

Nina's maternal grandparents, James and Mary Montgomery preceded her in death.

Nina's academic education began in 1989 at Chesterfield Tom Thumb Daycare Center. After graduating as a top scholar for her age, Nina moved t St. Joachim Catholic School where she began her years of loyal service to the Girl Scouts of America. Nina completed her elementary education at St. John de LaSalle Academy where she was an honor student and was the first elementary school student to receive the prestigious Quentis Bernard Garth award in 1997.

Nina was accepted at Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory School as an incoming freshman fall 2001. After completing her sophomore year, she began her life of employment with Leo Burnett Advertising Company. She was given the opportunity to work for the company and did so after school and on Saturdays.

Nina was elected Class President of her graduating class and led her peers with wisdom and dependability. She was voted Prom Queen of her graduating class.

Like so many students during their senior year, Nina began her college search. Her father had no preference as long as she continued her education. Her mother's and brother's preference was somewhere in Illinois. Nina had been accepted as an early enrollee at the University of Illinois (Champaign Urbana) and Illinois State University however; Nina's sight had been set for an out of state school. Unbeknownst to her parents Nina had also been accepted as an early enrollee at Florida Agriculture & Mechanics University (FAMU) in Tallahassee, Florida. Nina knew money was very tight and that an out of state education was out of the question, so Nina devised a plan to achieve her goal. With the assistance of her brother Lenny (aka "K"), she made a video exhibiting her skills as a bowler and sent it off to FAMU. After the university received the videotape and a phone conversation later with the university Bowling Coach, Nina won a spot on the team and became a "Lady Rattler".

While attending FAMU, in the back of Nina's mind she wanted to be a lawyer so during her first years she completed the basic academic classes required of all students. Nina's love for public speaking and writing led her to declare her major as a broadcast journalism student. Nina was always active and involved as the Vice President of the FAMU Chicago Club, A Volunteer for the Student Government Association and a member of the FAMU Bowling Team. In addition, she worked on a number community projects. Her love for children recently led her to start the process to volunteer to read stories at a local elementary school in Tallahassee. Nina never met a stranger who she did not greet with that that gorgeous enthusiastic smile and her beautiful hazel green eyes. According to one of her college professors, "she had this bright-eyed outlook on life, literally and symbolically."

Nina accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal savior in May 1995 and was baptized on July 2, 1995 at Trinity United Church of Christ under the pastoral leadership of Reverend Dr. Jeremiah Wright, Jr. She was actively involved in the Saturday Church School, Little Warriors for Christ Youth choir, Girl Scouts, Youth Drill Team, Imani Ye Watume Teen Choir , and was a Junior Membership clerk until she left for college. Nina Lynette touched many lives. She was a courageous young woman who was worthy of great honor. She possessed faith, integrity, intelligence, strength, creativity, trustworthiness, and with an infectious smile she had the gift of gab.

In such a short life, among all of her accomplishments and accolades her greatest gift was her value of family and friends. Nina loved and lived life to the fullest with grace, intelligence and dignity.
