Howard Stanley Johnson, 84, of Cumberland, Wis., formerly of Ellsworth, died Monday at his home. He was born July 11, 1924, the son of John and Minnie (Kirchner) Johnson.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and received two Bronze Battle Stars and a Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged on June 25, 1946. He married Agnes Krichner June 4, 1947. A member of Kinne-Englehart American Legion Post in Ellsworth, he farmed his entire life. He enjoyed playing cards, hunting and fishing.

Surviving are two daughters, Joyce (Kenneth) Schingledecker of Ellsworth and Maxine (Dennis Lusk) Stuefen of LeCenter, Minn.; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harvey and Herman; and two sisters, Violet Scott and Bernice Erickson; and his longtime companion, Joyce Scott of Cumberland.

Preceding him in death were his wife; a great-grandson; three brothers, Carl, Bob, Charles; and two sisters, Gladys and Mary.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Francis Catholic Church, Ellsworth, with the Rev. Bill Matzek officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Military honors will be provided by veterans of Kinne-Englehart American Legion Post, Ellsworth. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Chad (Cathy) Reiner, Ryan (Justine) Schingledecker and Eric (Candice) Reiner, and his granddaughters' husbands, Dan (Gina) Jensen, Bruce (Bobbi) Zignego and Jeff (Brandi) Welty.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Hill Funeral Home, Ellsworth, and for one hour before the service Monday at the church.
