Louis was the son of Daniel H. Harmon and Martha Alice Eubanks.
He married Elizabeth Statler, daughter of John Statler and Mahala Seabaugh on 13 Mar 1877. She died before 1882, but her burial place has not been found to date.
After her death he married her sister, Mary Polly Statler James, on 8 Aug 1882. Polly had been married to Adam James and was widowed after he died in 1874. She had one son, John James, who was raised by Louis as his own.
