Enlisted march 28, 1862 as Pvt., Co. F 44th Alabama Inf. Reg. He was sick at 2nd Manassas and Sharpsburg, September 17, 1862, and died in Richmond, Virginia, February 18, 1863. Buried in National Cemetery, Richmond, Virigina - Minor children, in 1874 had guardian named John M. Krout.
