Leo "Pete" W. Amend Jr. age 69, of Ripon, passed away on Monday, August 4, 2008, at St Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac.
Pete was born on November 30, 1938, in Ripon, the son of Leo Sr. and Isabel (Grota) Amend. He graduated from Ripon High School in 1956, and then went onto Marquette University getting his Bachelors of Business Administration in 1960. On June 18, 1960, Pete married Joan Ann Szopinski in Ripon. He was an owner and operator of Wisconsin State Canners Company, Food Broker, and Owner of Pete's Hwy. 23 Liquor. He was the last surviving active charter member of the Ripon/Green Lake Heartland Chapter of Ducks Unlimited. Pete donated his time and effort to DU for 34 years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.


Survivors include, his wife, Joan Amend of Ripon; sons, Jeffrey (Jody) Amend of Ripon, Matthew (Betsy) Amend of Markesan, Leo III (Sue) Amend of Ripon and Luke (Vicki) Amend of Green Lake; daughters, Amy Benton of Ripon and Theresa (John) Novak of Ripon; grandchildren, Diana and Thomas Amend, Morgan and Jackson Amend, Aurora and Hut Amend, Christopher, Samantha, Benjamin, and Peter Benton, Jacob, Alexander and Lynn Novak, Jacqueline Perkins and Jennifer (Ken) Mueller and Jason (special friend, Melissa) Garrett; great-grandchildren, Dalton and Preston Benton, Jordan Perkins and Jocelyn, Jonathan, Ellis and Jeffrey Mueller; brother, Andrew "Andy" (Nan) Amend of Princeton and family; sister, Barbara (Robert) Van Metre of FL and family; brothers-in-law, John (Joan) Szopinski of Green Bay and family and James (Barbara) Szopinski of Beaver Dam and family; Niece Emily Harley of Fairbanks, AK; Godmother and aunt, Irene Lay of Ripon and his best buddy, Rufus. Pete is preceded in death by his parents, Leo Sr. and Isabel Amend, In-laws, Jack and Ann Szopinski, sister-in-law, Joyce Harley and infant nephew, James Amend.
Visitation for Leo Amend Jr. will be held on Thursday, August 7, 2008, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. with Rosary at 7:30 p.m. at the Butzin-Marchant Funeral Home in Ripon and again on August 8, 2008, from 10 to 11 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 218 Blossom Street Ripon.
Funeral Service for Leo Amend Jr. will be held on Friday, August 8, 2008, at 11 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 218 Blossom Street with Father William H. Whalen officiating. Interment will be held in St. Patrick Cemetery, Ripon. Memorials may be given to: American Lung Association, 1740 Broadway, New York, NY 10019 or St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 218 Blossom Street Ripon, WI 54971.
