Berry Ozro Best was the son of Abijah and Juda Best. He was born on 6 August 1826 in Lauderdale County, Alabama.
Later, (abt 1834) the family relocated to Marshall County, Mississippi.

Berry was a veteran of the Mexican-American war as well as a Confederate veteran from the War Between the States.

He married Martha Elizabeth Narcissa Stephens on 20 December 1848, and they had eight children.

Tragically, Berry died as the result of an accident where he fell from a train on his return from a Confederate convention in Memphis, Tennessee.
