U.S. Congressman. He attended Columbia Classical Institute and was engaged in the retail lumber business in Marietta, Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Republican county committee, in 1881, chairman of the Lancaster County committee, in 1893 and a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, (1898-1900). In 1901, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-seventh Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Marriott Brosius, reelected to the Fifty-eighth, Fifty-ninth and Sixtieth Congresses, serving until 1909. After leaving Congress, he was a manufacturer and contractor, until his death at age 70.
