Geoffrey M. Hilber
Hawley Minn.

Geoffrey M. Hilber, 39, of Hawley, Minn., died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008, at his home. He was born March 29, 1969, in Elgin, Ill., the son of Sharon Mittag Schanilec and Gary Hilber.

After he graduated from high school, he joined the Navy and served on the USS Constellation until being honorably discharged in 1993. He married Deborah Buttler and together they had two beautiful children, son Canon and daughter Logen, who he dearly loved.

In his younger days, Geoff loved to play football and basketball and run track. He grew up with a love for fi shing, swimming and waterskiing in the lakes of Minnesota which he enjoyed doing until the time of his death. He was also an avid reader with an extensive collection of books.

Being outdoors, whether at the lake or his mother's farm exploring the property, Geoff's love of God's nature brought him peace. Often, you could find him discovering old cast offs, interesting rocks and other treasurers. His spirituality ran deep and wide and was with him at all times.

His mischievous smile, sense of humor and all the wonderful stories he would tell will be greatly missed. His spirit will live on through his children and those who loved him.

Geoff was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Monroe Mittag; paternal grandparents, Robert and Kathleen Hilber; and a half brother, Justin Hilber.

He is survived by his children, Canon and Logen of Fargo, N.D.; parents, Sharon (Maynard) Schanilec of Hawley and Gary (Robin) Hilber of Columbus; sibling, Stephanie (Patrick) Kautzman of Fargo, Jennifer (Brett) Johnson of Grand Forks, N.D; a stepsister, Erin May of Spartanburg, S.C.; a stepbrother, Jordan Hilber of Columbus; and a half brother, Jonathan Hilber of Columbus. He also is survived by several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Geoff Hilber Memorial Fund, established for his children at Starion Financial, 4610 Amber Valley Parkway, Suite B, Fargo, ND 58104.

Funeral Mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at Church of the Nativity in Fargo. Calling will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Boulger Funeral Home in Fargo and from 9 a.m. until service time Friday at the church. Burial will be at Moorhead Memorial Gardens in Moorhead, Minn.
