Eli English settled in the Fort Hartstuff area (now Wauchula) in 1874 and operated the first store south of Ft. Meade. His homestead is near the present day Farmer's Market on US Hwy 17 in Wauchula and the section was known as "English." Eli English served in Company A of the Florida Special Cavalry, Confederate States of America.
