William Milton Davis was the son of James E Davis and Rebecca Hall Davis. He married (1st) Nancy Kathleen Stephens and (2nd) Nancy Elizabeth Gourley.

William was born on 11 Nov 1841 in South Carolina. In 1853, his family moved to Georgia.

When the Civil War began, William volunteered for the Confederate Army. He enlisted on 31 May 1861. He was promoted to Corporal on 26 Nov 1862 and wounded during the Wilderness campaign in May 1864. While on medical furlough in Jul 1864, William was captured by Union forces. He was transferred Chattanooga, Tennesse, then to a prison in Louisville, Kentucky, and then to a military prison north of Louisville, across the Ohio River.

After the war ended, William returned to Georgia, where he married Nancy Kathleen Stephens. They had 11 children, 9 of whom survived into adulthood. After his first wife died, William married Nancy Elizabeth Gourley in 1904.

William was a trustee for Pleasant Grove School in Cobb County, Georgia. He and his family also founded Davis Academy (Mountain View School now stands on this site). Milton Davis Elementary School in Marietta, Georgia, opened in August 1987, bearing William's name.
