Clarence's early death was the result of the 1918 influenza pandemic. Clarence was homesteading in Billings, Montana along with wife Amy and their kids (and with Henry Clark & his wife, according to Jackie Clark Melton). His body was brought back by train to Iowa for burial.
His wife, Amy, was left with seven children to raise, including a son who was not yet born.
