Policeman In Chicago Shot To Death
A policeman was shot to death
Friday night in a gun battle with
a youth outside the Chicago Stadium
just before a professional basketball
game. The gunman later died of his
wounds.
Patrolman John J. Matonich, 33,
assigned to patrol the Stadium parking
lot, was the eighth Chicago policeman
slain in the line of duty in 1970. He was
shot five times in the chest and died in
surgery 1 1/2 hours after the incident.
Police said the gunman stole a taxi at
a downtown train station, robbed the
driver of $30 and threw him out of the
cab near the Stadium. The taxi then
bumped into several other cars while
traveling through heavy traffic, police
said.
Patrolman Matonich and Sgt. Timothy
Allman, unaware of the robbery and
chase, walked over to the cab, which
had been stopped by the collisions to
assist the driver.
Allman opened the cab door and the
driver shot at him but missed, according
to police. Matonich fired three shots
and the gunman slumped. Allman reached
in to pull the wounded man out of the
cab and the gunman fired five shots into
Matonich's chest.
By this time Patrolman Warren Lindvig –
and the original taxi driver, Mark Osberg,
19 – caught up with the taxi and fired
three more shots at the gunman.
