Lorene was born on Feb. 16, 1912, in Hazel Dell, a daughter of Edward and Bonnie (Short) Kline. She married Gerald Childress on Sept. 8, 1935, in Oakland, Calif. He passed away on Dec. 1, 1966.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty Hughes of Champaign; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, Jack Nelson, three brothers and one sister.
She enjoyed donating her time to both The Salvation Army and the Stevick Center.
She was also an accomplished seamstress and was employed for 37 years at Collegiate Cap & Gown in that capacity. Additionally, Lorene took pleasure in working as a volunteer for The Little Angels Christmas Tree at Market Place Mall every December.
