since Sep. 9, 1944, 2nd Lt Joseph G. Alles, 23, is reported dead, according to word received Monday night from the War Dept by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Philip Alles of Washington township. Lt Alles was on his 23rd mission at the time of his death. A graduate of Washington Center high school in 1939, Lt Alles enlisted in the Army Air Corps in July, 1942. He received his training at Nashville, TN., Montgomery AL, Jackson, MS and Greenville MS. After receiving his wings at Selma AL, Lt Alles spent 14 days at home and then returned to AL as an instructor. He was later transferred to Florida and from FL was sent to San Antonio, TX. After spending a week in Nebraska, Lt Alles was sent overseas. On his way from Nebraska to a point of embarkation on the east coast, Lt Alles signaled as he flew over the home of his parents in Washington township. Lt Alles was awarded the Air Medal, three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Bronze Star and the Presidential Citation. Surviving Lt Alles besides his parents are five brothers and two sisters, Herbert and Phyllis Alles, Fort Wayne; Pvt Ivo Alles, stationed at Camp Blanding, FL; Dale Alles, A-S stationed at Great Lakes; Paul, Evon and Patty, at home.
