The son of John & Magdalena (Snyder) Power, he married Rebecca Kennedy and fathered Mary Elizabeth (b. 11/01/40 - married Dr. S. H. Whitmer), Lucinda E. "Lucy" (b. @1843 - married Emanuel Corl), Anna B. (b. 06/12/46 [death certificate claims 1854; censuses say otherwise] - married Daniel Fleisher), Julia C. (b. 10/11/48 - married Harry C. Shearer), John C. (b. @1851), Anna Rebecca (b. 06/12/54 - married Silas L. Fleisher and Daniel Fleisher), William H. (b. 09/13/56), and Maude Patterson (b. 07/21/64 - married Walter J. Roadman or Rodeman). In 1860, he was a well-to-do farmer living with his family in Tyrone Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 10" tall with dark hair and black eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of forty-two in Loysville, Perry County, August 8, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 13 as corporal with Co. H, 133rd Pennsylvania Infantry. He was sick in the hospital at muster-out but honorably discharged May 25, 1863, the same date as the rest of the company.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of forty-four in Chambersburg February 3, 1864, mustered into federal service there February 10 as a private with Co. D, 187th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865. His obituary in the Harrisburg Telegraph identifies him as "Major Power" even though he never held a rank higher than corporal.

Following Rebecca's death, he married widow Catherine Baker, née Peck, but they had no children.

William Power, distinguished as a soldier who rendered faithful service to his country during almost the entire period of the Civil War, died of old age at his home in Landisburg last Thursday. He was a son of John Power, and was born in Tyrone township nearly 80 years ago. He was a moulder by trade and later engaged in farming, his grandfather William Power, having bequeathed to him the farm now owned by Samuel R. Lightner, in Tyrone township. He was twice married. His first wife was Rebecca Kennedy and the fruit union was eight children; Re, Mary E., wife of Dr. S.H. Whitmer, of this place; Annie, wife of Prof. Daniel Fleisher, of Columbia; Scott of Iowa; W.H. Power, of Landisburg; Maude, wife of Mr. Rodeman, of Westmorland county, Pa.; Julia (dead) married to H.C. Shearer, Esq. of New Bloomfiled,; Lucinda (dead), married to Emanuel Corl, of Landisburg, and Belle (dead). His second wife, who survives him without issue, was Mrs. Catherine Baker. He was a lieutenant of Captain William Fetter's company of Landisburg cadets prior to the Civil War, and an aid to General Simpson. August 13, 1862, he enlisted as corporal [false: no one could enlist at a rank] in Company H, 133d P.V., and was discharged May 25, 1863. February 25, 1864, he re-enlisted, in Company D, 187th regiment, P.V. [again, false], and was mustered out August 3, 1865, having served through the greater part of the Civil War. Upon returning from the war he resumed farming, which pursuit he followed more or less until his death. He was first a Whig and then a Republican. He was a county commissioner during 1854 and 1855, and also filled many local offices. He was a member of the M.E. church. The funeral was held Monday morning, his pastor, Rev. H.K. Ash, officiated, Interment was in Landisburg cemetery.
