Miss Sarah Carpenter was born July 15, 1836, near Dundee, Yates County, New York. In 1859, she married Martin Dunn Ellis, and with him moved to Michigan a few years later. Mr. Ellis died, leaving the widow with five children for whom she made many sacrifices in order to properly care for and educate them.
They all survive her and are; Dr. Edward Jacob Carpenter Ellis of Benzonia, Michigan; Rev. Benjamin Henry Ellis of Vancleave, Mississippi; Mrs. Emma Louise Chisholm of Cincinnatti, Ohio; Mrs. Mary Franc Ellis Clark of Yankton, S.D.; and Mrs. Anna E. Hamilton of Rockford.
Because of the mother's failing health, Mrs. Hamilton brought her to Pecan, Mississippi, in 1905 where they remained until coming to Rockford in September 1919. Mrs. Ellis was an invalid for a number of years and on March 9, last fell fracturing her hip. She was a great sufferer until relieved by death which occurred at 10:15 on the morning of April 1st. She early united with the Dundee Baptist Church, afterwards taking her letter to the Hillsdale, Michigan, Baptist Church where she retained membership until her death.
Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church, conducted by the Pastor, Reverend Busby, assisted by the Reverend J.A. Gann.
