After his Navy service, he returned to Toledo, working at the GM Powertrain Plant (Chevy), Bricklayers Union Local #3, General Mills, and Rescue Crisis Services retiring in 2005.
Russell was an avid fisherman, reader and chess player. He liked being on the computer. Russ was also a Ham Radio Operator "KC8TVV", enjoyed astronomy, playing poker as well as being a coach for Jr. league Hockey in the 1970's.
Russell was preceded in death by his father, Walter (PeeWee) VanderHorst and brother, Martin VanderHorst. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Shirley; children, Russell S. (Carolyn), David, Brian, Matthew (Christy), Kimberly, and Lisa (Mike); Mother, Barbara VanderHorst; grandchildren, Michael and Devin; and brother, Larry (Pat); along with many nieces, nephews and close friends.
Visitation will be held on Monday, June 2, 2008 2-8 pm at David R. Jasin Funeral Home, Inc., 5300 N. Summit St.
Funeral services will begin Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at 11 am in the funeral home. Interment will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery. Those wishing to express a word of encouragement or share a memory may do so at www.jasinfuneralhome.com.
