She was born on May 3, 1918, in Stinesville to the late Claude Parham and Helen (Acuff) Parham. She was married to Willard "Bud" Russell Elliott and following her first husband's death she married Edmond Glen Stines.
Betty was a professional artist during the 1940s and 1950s. She was a Brownie Scout leader and a Sunday school teacher in Ellettsville. She worked at the Unique Florist Shoppe as a floral designer from 1963-69. During this time she served as chairman and co-chairman of Art Exhibits at the Monroe County Fall Festival. From 1964 until 1980 she was an organizer and member of the Hoosier Hills Art Guild, serving as recording secretary, organizer of the Annual Student Art Exhibit, and on the Board of Directors. From 1952-2002, she took part in many art exhibitions at Indiana University, Manchester College, Hoosier Hills Art Gallery, Owen County Art Guild and Swope Art Gallery. Numerous photographs and articles about her exhibitions and paintings have been published, such as her mural for the Ellettsville First Baptist Church in the Bloomington Herald-Telephone (1949). News of her work has also been reported by the Ellettsville Journal (opening of First Fall Festival Art Show) and the Bloomington Herald-Telephone (photograph and article of Officers and Directors of Hoosier Hills Art Guild planning for the Grand Opening of the new Art Gallery, 1964). The Ellettsville Journal also printed a photograph and article of the presentation of her painting to the Indiana Gas and Water Company by Ellettsville Chamber of Commerce.
Betty received many first prizes in her achievements, including Juried Art Shows, as well as Best of Show and Champion Exhibitor awards. In 1967 she was presented with a Certificate of Award as an Exhibitor of Fine Arts at the State House Salon, Indianapolis. Her biographical details are listed in Who's Who publications and biographical dictionaries. Mrs. Stines was a member of the Ellettsville First Baptist Church and the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C.
She was preceded in death by grandson Brad Crum; granddaughter Jamie Lee Crum; brother Paul Parham; son-in-law Tom Gillespie; and infant brother David Parham.
Betty is survived by her husband, Edmond Glen Stines; daughters, Jeri Gillespie (Gene), and Kathy Holtsclaw (Jim); son, Willard "Bud" Elliott (Dawn); step-children, Anne Foster, Ed Stines (Rachel), Laurel Brinson (Gail), Rick Stines (Becky), and Joe Stines (LaDonna); grandchildren, Chuck Gillespie, Vikki Gillespie, Lori Shepherd (Jamie), Lisa Sullivan (Rick), Sean Sullivan (Summer), Chad Holtsclaw and Shane Holtsclaw; step-grand children, Geoff Foster, Ben Foster, Toni Brinson, Emily Myers, Bobby Stines, Jodee Duncan, Chrystal Robinson, Dustin Stines, and Kevin Fultcher; great-grandchildren, Tyler Sloan, Morgan Sloan, Kristin Shepherd, Cailin Shepherd, Dylan Trimble, Emily Mosier and Conner Holtsclaw; great-step-grandchildren, Will Myers, Charlie Stines, Amber Brinson and Andrew Foster; siblings, Maxine Mailloux (Ivan), Dick Parham (Peggy), Bob Parham (Charlotte) and sister-in-law, Pear L. Parham; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2008, at Ellettsville First Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Mark Villanova performing the service. Burial is to follow at Methodist Cemetery.
