Melvin L. Paulson, 86, Bemidji, died Saturday at North Country Hospital. Funeral services were at First Lutheran Church. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery.

He was born Nov. 28, 1898, in Todd County, Minn., the son of Edward and Carrie Paulson. At age 16, he and his family moved to the Bemidji area. He served in the U.S. Army in France during World War I. He returned to Bemidji after his discharge. He married Hulda Jacobson on Nov. 22, 1922, in East Grand Forks. They had lived in Bemidji since then. He had been employed by Leader Oil Co. and then was a steam engineer with the former Bemidji Community Hospital. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, the American Legion and was an active member of the Beltrami County DFL.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Wallace of Bemidji, and Leonard of Charleston, S.C.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ed of Bemidji and Anton of Marysville, Wash.; three sisters, Tilda Larson of Seattle, Clara Langerak of Bemidji, and Nora Roesner of Alamo, Texas; many nices and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
