David Wayne Claypool, one of the earliest settlers of Crook county, and an Oregon pioneer died of heart failure at his home, east of this city, on January 30.

Mr. Claypool was born in Hendricks county, Indiana, on October 8, 1834, and was the oldest son of David Claypool and Nancy (Rooker) Claypool.

In 1839, with his parents, he moved to Missouri, and in 1846 the family came to Oregon, locating in Linn county.

He enlisted as a volunteer in 1856, in a company commanded by Captain John Settle, and served in the Yakima Indian war.

He was married in Linn county, on October 8, 1857, to Louisa Elkins, a daughter of the late Luther Elkins.

In 1887 he moved with his family to what is now Crook county and was the first settler in the Ochoco valley.

His wife died August 16, 1892, at Eureka Springs, Ark., where they were residing temporarily for the benefit of her health.

He leaves two brothers and two sisters, Samuel R. Claypool, of Lebanon, Or.; John H. Claypool, of Prineville, Or.; Polly J. Persell, of Weston, Or., and Martha M. Parker, of Portland.

He was the father of five children, three of whom are now living. Those living are Luther and Chester Claypool, of Prineville, and Libbie E. Motley, of Washington
