The daughter of one of America's most prominent abolitionists, Zebina Eastman, Mary Jane received a superlative education during his ambassadorship in England during the Civil War.

Mary Jane was fluent in French, Spanish, and Italian, a prolific reader and proficient writer. In public affairs and social reforms, she distinguished herself in guiding Wyoming as a Territory and a state.

On the celebration of Wyoming's entry as the 44th state of the Union, she was honored, before a crowd of over 6,000 people in front of the Capitol Building in Cheyenne, to recite an original poem celebrating suffrage and statehood.

From her arrival to Cheyenne in 1878, she and her husband proudly made it their home and propelled it with a progressive vision.
