Son of Martin and Maria Anna (Ufheil) Kabis. Owned and operated the Kabis Cafe for over ten years. First elective county clerk of Laramie county, WY., 1870-1872; city clerk and assessor of Cheyenne, same period; mem. State Senate. 1891-1895; adjutant general. Wyoming, under Gov, J. E. Osborne; U. S. deputy revenue collector, 1893-1898.
Leopold Kabis, aged 73, died shortly before 9 o'clock this morning at his home, 508 East Eighteenth street. Death was due to heart failure. He had been working in the yard about his home and had been chopping wood. He entered the house and sat down and soon afterward Mrs. Kabis entered and found him dead. He had said nothing of feeling ill and apparently was in his usual health.
Mr. Kabis was born in Baden, Germany, and came to America when just a lad. He came to Cheyenne in 1868 and since then has been prominent in the affairs of the city, holding several political offices. In 1874 he held the office of county clerk and later was city clerk. At one time he was United States revenue collector and in 1892 he was candidate for governor. He was attorney general during 1893 and 1894. During his residence here he had built up big business and property interests. He was prominent in fraternal circles.
He was the oldest Odd Fellow in Wyoming and is said to have been the oldest in the United States, if not the whole world, having affiliated with that order over fifty years ago. He was a member of the of Pythias and of the Elks, and was the first exalted ruler of the Elks. B. P. O. E., 660.
He is survived by his widow and by his sister, Mrs. Warren Richardson, both of Cheyenne.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Elks' home, the Elks and Odd Fellows having the ceremonies in charge. According to his wish the body will be taken to Denver, where family services will precede cremation. The family requests that no flowers be sent.
