He was the son of Stephen Hopkins and Rhoda Dewey. Lived many years in Swanton Vermont and Glens Falls where he was a Selectman, Justice of the Peace and a member of the Swanton Constitutional Convention (1828). Heman was also a Captain of the Vermont militia under Brig. Gen. James Farnsworth. He married Hannah Robinson of Bennington, VT in 1797 and they had 11 children.
