JAMES H. FAULKNER, SR.

In 1958, Jimmy Faulkner was asked by his friend, David G. Volkert, to work with him in the engineering firm Volkert had recently purchased. Volkert had plans to move the headquarters of Dullot and Ewin from New Orleans, Louisiana to Mobile, Alabama, and he realized the value that could be derived from a man of Faulkner's marketing talents and far-reaching circle of friends and contacts. Faulkner has been associated with Volkert & Associates, as the firm became known, for 47 years.

Faulkner's wide spectrum of professional and business involvement has been of great value to the firm's success. As owner and publisher of a chain of South Alabama newspapers for 42 years, president of seven radio stations, and founder of Loyal American Life Insurance Company, Faulkner has exemplified a true commitment to the economic growth and development of Alabama.

Faulkner has enjoyed an active political life in Alabama. As the youngest mayor in America, he led the town of Bay Minette into a period of strength during World War II. He last served as a state Senator for Baldwin, Escambia, and Monroe Counties, and ran two campaigns for Governor of Alabama.

Improving education has been a lifelong passion to Faulkner, who graduated from the University of Missouri and holds seven honorary doctorate degrees in law and humane letters. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Alabama Christian College in Montgomery, renamed Faulkner University in his honor, and Chairman of the Advisory Board for James H. Faulkner State Community College. He has worked on several commissions to develop long term plans to insure the growth and development of Alabama's secondary education system.

The North Baldwin Chamber of Commerce named Jimmy Faulkner "Person of the Century" in 2000. He was awarded the Alabama Press Association's "Lifetime Achievement Award" in 2003 and received the Volkert Chairman's Award in 1994.
