John Walter McCall

John Walter McCall died on Saturday, July 10, 2004 at the Green Acres Country Care Center in North Branch. He was 103 years old.

John was born on March 10, 1901 to Frank and Elizabeth (Werlie) McCall in Jessup, Iowa. When he was eleven years old, John moved with his family to Mora.

He attended the McKinnley School. From the time John was in the eighth grade until he was 35 years old, he helped his parents on the family farm and worked other jobs. He assisted road construction crews in the area, helped build homes and bring in the harvest for other farmers. In 1936, he was united in marriage to Alice Lidstrom in Mora. They had one daughter, Janelle.

John farmed and lived in Comfort Township until 1992 when he went to live with his daughter in North Branch. In March of 2004 he went to live at Green Acres Country Care Center in North Branch.

John liked to play cards, especially Whist. He enjoyed socializing and talking with his neighbors as well as reading. He was the ‘neighborhood helper’, someone people would call when they needed a hand.

John is preceded in death by his wife Alice, five brothers and six sisters. He is survived by daughter Janelle Mork of North Branch; grandchildren Steve (Barbara) Mork of North Branch, Laird (Cathy) Mork of Harris, Debra (Jeff) Rod of Cambridge; great-grandchildren Daniel Mork, Thomas Mork, Patrick Mork, Ashley Mork, Shelby Mork, Kari Rod and Kyle Rod; sisters Florence Mattson of Mora and Luverne Erickson of Bloomington; numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at Grace Lutheran Church in Mora with Rev. Doug Larson officiating. Casketbearers were Steve Mork, Laird Mork, Daniel Mork, Jeff Rod, Kyle Rod and Leonard Mattson. Music was provided by organist Betty Smith and soloist Randy Reynolds. Burial was at Oakwood Cemetery in Mora.
