According to one of her grandchildren, Eva never told anyone her actual age. The researcher can find documentation with birth years of

May 1880 - from the 1880 US Census (this is the most accurate record it lists her name as "Doublieu". Her mother Elizabeth died about 2 months after her birth. She was raised and actually called James' 3rd wife, Mary Forest Saunders, "Mother".)

June 1, 1882 - from her gravestone

June 1, 1884 - from the Texas Death certificate

Est 1888 - from the US Census for 1900 which lists her as 12 years old

Over her lifetime she also used different variations of her name. The name listed on the 1880 Census is Doublieu Saunders. When she was 18 she decided to change her name to Eva Viola Saunders. On February 21, 1902, she entered and signed her marriage license (issued in Anacoco, Vernon Parish, Louisiana) as Viola Saunders. She has also signed property deeds as Eva Hamilton, Eva Viola Hamilton, Viola Hamilton and Viola Eva Hamilton. On one census, her name was erroneously transposed as Viala Hamilton.
