During the Civil War, he enlisted in Co. K, 35th Illinois Infantry in 1861 and was discharged in 1864. He was very proud of his service. He married Elizabeth Ann (Cutter) Allsop in Dewitt Co., Illinois on November 28, 1867.
He homesteaded 320 acres in Section 30, Macon Twp. shortly after his arrival in Kansas and owned various other properties and businesses during his successful life.
He was the father of 4 children: Ellen E. and Susie E. - both deceased as children; Georgia Grace who married Adrian Peter Wright and Ezra Leland who married Nina Frances Clarkson.
He died at 5 PM Thursday, February 22, 1906 at his home near Valley Center from cancer of the stomach from which he had suffered since December 6. There was to be a service at his home at 9:30 AM Saturday after which the body was to be taken by noon train to Newton with a short service being held at the grave. The Halstead Lodge of Odd Fellows and the Newton G.A.R. took part in the service.
