"Two years after the death of his wife Anna Peter married Louise Schoephoerster, who was only 18 years at the time. She was born in Nettlestadt, Westphalen, Prussia, Germany, in 1842; came to America with her parents, Mr.& Mrs. Carl Schoephoerster, sister Mary (Mrs Beckman), Caroline, (Mrs Hetmsmeier), brother Fred, and Granma Moehlman. One little brother died soon after they reached the little log cabin among the hills near where the Cedar Hill school house stood. Louisa, received her elementary education in Germany and was skilled in fine hand writing and needle work. She was employed by Tabors, and English family who owned the farm recently purchased by the Schneller brothers. Here she became quite proficient in the English Language. After marriage she adopted the Swiss language if her husband. She moved into the log cabin with her parent in-law and two step sons. Four children were born to Peter and Louise, Anna (Mrs George Ragatz), Mary ( Mrs Henry Meyer) and Charles. One little girl, Marie died at the age of 8 years. The old log house had outlived its usefulness. In 1869, the year their son Charles was born, they built the big stone house. The stones used were taken from the Clavatscher stone quarry. Casper Steuber and Fred Schulte were the contractors. At that time it was the most imposing building in the community.

Work was still done the hard way. Lack of refrigeration necessitated many trips to the basement. mother made candles from sheep's tallow, soap from waste fat, and lye drawn from ashes. She made butter, cheese, sauerkraut, quantities of bread and Saturday coffee ake. She carried wood from the out door wood pile and water from the well. She washed clothes on a washboard, often rocking the cradle with the cord tied to her ankle. On winter evenings the spinning wheel was ever humming or the knitting needles clucking to make socks and stockings and mittens from the wool of their sheep. She always had a fine garden and had time for flowers, the traditional pinks, four-o-clocks, zinnias and geraniums...." - Mina Gasser Enge - Enge Family History - (contributed by WJH).
